A one-day workshop recently took place, focusing on the potential of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) as an effective tool for resolving conflicts between patients and healthcare
professionals. The session, which featured interactive role-playing scenarios, allowed participants to explore common medico-legal disputes and gain hands-on experience in mediation techniques.
The workshop highlighted the numerous benefits of ADR, including better communication, reduced costs, and faster resolution times. It emphasised the importance of fostering a collaborative environment that prioritises relationship-building over confrontation. Attendees also discussed practical strategies for integrating ADR into healthcare settings to improve
dispute resolution processes.
Coordinated by Prof. Sandra C. Buttigieg and led by visiting lecturer Dr Noemia Bessa Vilela, the workshop aimed to empower both healthcare practitioners and patients to approach conflicts with cooperation, rather than litigation. This forward-thinking initiative paves the way for a more harmonious approach to managing healthcare-related disputes.
