The University of Malta proudly announced the commencement of the academic year 2024/2025 for the University of the Third Age (U3A) and University of the Fourth Age (U4A), reaffirming its commitment to fostering lifelong learning and promoting active ageing.
The opening ceremony, held at the Floriana U3A Centre, was attended by Hon. Malcolm Paul Agius Galea, Parliamentary Secretary for Active Ageing, and Prof. Carmen Sammut, Pro-Rector for Student & Staff Affairs and Outreach.
Hon. Clint Camilleri, Minister for Gozo and Planning, was present at the opening of the U3A Gozo Centre, further reinforcing the University’s outreach efforts in providing quality educational experiences for older adults across the Maltese Islands.
Prof. Christian Borg Xuereb, Rector’s Delegate for U3A and U4A, emphasised the unique role these institutions play in enriching the lives of older adults. The diverse array of courses offered this year continues the tradition of promoting intellectual and social engagement, from culture and history to modern technology and health. The U3A and U4A initiatives allow participants to gain new perspectives, pursue personal interests, and build lasting social networks.
The success of the U3A and U4A would not be possible without the dedicated team supporting the operations and programmes.
Ms Simone Ellul, Administrator; Mr Joseph Said, Assistant to the Rector’s Delegate; and Mr Joseph Vella, an invaluable volunteer, have worked tirelessly to ensure the smooth running of the centres. Their contributions have been instrumental in making the U3A and U4A vibrant communities of learning and social connections.
A special mention must be made of the invaluable support provided by Mapfre Middlesea, who have generously offered two halls in Floriana for U3A lectures for this academic year. This act of generosity highlights Mapfre’s commitment to social engagement and active ageing in the community.
A special note of gratitude is extended to Prof. Marvin Formosa, the outgoing Rector’s Delegate, for his exceptional work and commitment to developing the U3A into what it is today. His dedication over the past decade has significantly elevated the standards of lifelong learning for older adults in Malta.
With new programmes in place and ongoing support from distinguished faculty, partners, and volunteers, the U3A and U4A look forward to another fruitful academic year, continuing to provide a space for older adults to explore, discover, and thrive.
