Prof. Angela Abela from the Department of Child and Family Studies, Prof. Suzanne Piscopo from the Department of Health, Physical Education and Consumer Studies, Prof. Sue Vella from the Department of Social Policy and Social Work and Allison Zammit Said organised the 1st International Conference on Strong Blended Families Understanding What Works which took place on 6 and 7 February 2025 at the Valletta Campus of the University of Malta.
The conference which was organised on behalf of the University of Malta and the Malta Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society brought together world-class scholars, family researchers, and practitioners in various fields from 18 different countries from all over the world to share their expertise and experience, adding to over four decades of blended family research.
The Maltese team of scholars presented a study that was carried out among Maltese blended families who consider themselves as ‘doing well’ and highlighted their resilience in the face of adversity. The study was meant to inspire other blended families not to give up during difficult times and to learn from other families about what works. The study also provides recommendations for policy and practice.
At the end of the conference, delegates unanimously agreed to set up an International Network for Strong Blended Families, creating a global community of scholars dedicated to understanding and supporting blended families across the world. This network will promote the exchange of knowledge, provide guidance on common challenges faced by blended families as well as how these are successfully managed, and promote positive narratives of the diversity and resilience of blended family structures across cultures.
The conference was opened by H.E. President Emeritus Marie Louise Coleiro Preca and University Rector Prof. Alfred Vella and closed by the Minister for Social Policy and Children’s Rights, the Hon. Michael Falzon.
