We are pleased to announce the publication with Routledge of a new edited volume, The Land and the Cross: Properties of the Order of St John between Centre and Periphery (16th-18th centuries), co-edited by Dr Valeria Vanesio, Dr Valentina Burgassi (Politecnico di Torino), and George Said-Zammit, and published by Routledge. UM academics like Prof. Victor Mallia-Milanes and Prof. Emanuel Buttigieg contributed to the volume.
This book aims to provide an in-depth exploration of the Hospitaller landscape, examining the Order’s properties, including priories, bailiwicks, commanderies, and foundations across Europe, from Portugal to Italy and from Germany to Malta, during the early modern period. It offers critical insights into the intersection of power, property, and geography in the context of the Order’s expansion and influence.
The book is now available online.
