The Seismic Monitoring and Research Group (SMRG) at the Department of Geosciences, University of Malta, has recorded the major 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28, 2025.
At 07:20 AM Malta time (06:20 UTC), a powerful earthquake struck Myanmar (Burma). The epicentre was located just a few dozen kilometres from Mandalay, a city with an approximate population of one million. This region experiences high seismic activity and hazard, as it lies along the collision zone between the Indian and Eurasian plates in the Himalayan range. Historically, the region has been affected by several earthquakes exceeding magnitude 7.0.
The SMRG network consists of nine seismic stations across the Maltese Islands. While primarily monitoring regional seismic activity, SMRG also integrates data from global networks to analyze significant earthquakes worldwide.
