In today’s fast-evolving world, it has become crucial for universities and industry to form strategic alliances that bridge the gap between academic learning and the practical demands of the job market. For this reason and aligned with the University’s Strategic Theme IV – Enterprise and Industry Impact, the UM Rector met representatives of exporting manufacturers on the 26 March.
The meeting was attended by representatives leading organisations involved in the manufacturing and export of food, beverages, electronic equipment, and pharmaceuticals. The discussion centred around the need to continue preparing future professionals in transversal skills such as teamwork, critical thinking, collaboration, and leadership. Industry representatives explained the challenges that companies face when recruiting and promoting people in managerial and specialist positions. The two sides agreed that students need to have both technical, managerial and soft skills in order to be successful in dynamic industries and discussed ways in which the various faculties at the University can improve collaboration with industry.
Representatives of the Faculties of Economics, Management and Accountancy (FEMA), as well as Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, presented the various degree programmes they provide apart from their research activity. The forum was hosted by the Rector and the Pro-Rector for Strategic Planning and Sustainability, Prof. Valerie Sollars. Dr Joe Schembri, a resident academic member of staff at FEMA, is supporting the UM Strategic Committee in organizing and facilitating these meetings.
