PhD in the area of Remote Sensing from the Stratosphere
Project Stratos 1 – Space balloon launch and associated scholarship (grant agreement 2021_076_UM_MinRIC)
A Scholarship funded by the Ministry for Research, Innovation and the Co-Ordination of Post Covid-19 Strategy under A Space Awareness Programme for Education and Industry
- Applications are invited for a funded PhD opportunity to work on the project entitled Stratos 1 - Space balloon launch and associated scholarship financed by the Ministry for Research, Innovation and the Co-Ordination of Post Covid-19 Strategy under A Space Awareness Programme for Education and Industry in which the University of Malta is a beneficiary. The project is led by the Institute of Space Sciences and Astronomy. The project is intended to educate and inform the public on the data emanating from the space balloon launch. The candidate chosen for this specific call is expected to analyse the raw data. Further information on the project may be obtained by contacting Professor Kristian Zarb Adami by email.
- The ideal candidate should have a Master’s degree in an area related to the research. Preference will be given to candidates who have a keen interest in the area of multi-spectral image processing. Applicants should be eligible to be admitted to the PhD programme of this University in terms of the applicable bye-laws.
- The selected candidate will be required to register for a PhD programme with the Institute of Space Sciences and Astronomy at the University of Malta on a full-time basis, commencing not later than October 2021. These studies will be supported by an annual stipend of EUR 8,000 for a duration of 36 months. Supervision of the PhD programme will be provided by academics from the Institute of Space Sciences and Astronomy. The Scholarship will be subject to the eligibility of the candidate to enrol in the PhD programme.
- International applicants are required to present an internationally recognised English Language proficiency certificate at the required level. Further details are available on the International Office website. International applicants are also advised to familiarise themselves with information available on the website of the International Office, particularly to the sections concerning visas, travel and e-residence permit conditions and requirements. International candidates will need to provide assurance that they have the funds available to cover their stay in Malta. The stipend awarded for this scholarship is to be considered as a form of allowance and will not cover all the costs attached to studying and living in Malta.

International candidates are required to present certified translations of their qualifications into English.
Late applications will not be considered.
Note: The scholarship awardee will be required to complete a PhD application, which is considered separately. - The selection procedure will involve:
a. scrutiny of qualifications and experience claimed, supported by testimonials and/or certificates
b. shortlisting
c. presentation, and
c. an interview.
