A Call is being published for the provision of expert services on a part-time basis in in the field of ocean wave measurement, data interpretation, and analyses, for a maximum duration of SIX (6) months, within the ambit of the Interreg Italia-Malta 2014-2020 i-waveNET project.
1. Applications are invited for an external expert to work on i-waveNET (implementation of an innovative system to monitor the state of the sea in climate change scenarios), a project financed by the InterregV-A Programme in which the Department of Geosciences at the University of Malta is a partner with Universita’ degli Studi di Palermo.
2. The main tasks of the engaged expert include the following:
- Study the local sea-surface currents and waves climate and analyse the data collected by the CALYPSO HF radar system.
- Identify optimal location to deploy ADCP instrument for a period of two months. This will need to take into consideration bathymetry and radar coverage.
- Provide guidance to set up and deploy the ADCP instrument that is owned by the Department of Geosciences of the University of Malta.
- Compare the in-situ sea surface currents and waves data collected during the mission by the ADCP with those produced by the CALYPSO HF radar system.
- Carry out statistical analysis to validate the currents data produced by hydrodynamical models along the water column.
- Report back on the work being conducted to the Project Leader at the Department of Geosciences of the University of Malta.
- Prepare a manuscript for publication with the findings.
3. The ideal candidate needs to have at least a PhD degree in oceanography and have previous experience in wave data measurements. Candidates should also have experience of coupling sea surface currents derived by HF radars and waves in the MEDSLIK oil spill modelling system that the Department of Geosciences is running.
4. The candidate needs to be proficient in English language, both written and spoken.
5. The awardee can work remotely provided. However, weekly meetings must be carried out to monitor progress.
6. The engagement will last for a maximum of SIX (six) months from receipt of appointment letter, over the period April-September 2023, with the selected candidate expected to invest a minimum of 100 logged hours over the same period (6 months).
