The Faculty of Theology at the University of Malta is pleased to announce the introduction of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Scripture Studies, scheduled to begin in October 2023.
The new B.A. (Hons) in Scripture Studies is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of various scientific methods and approaches to Biblical interpretation, thereby enabling a deeper comprehension of Scripture. The programme will equip candidates to engage with the biblical text directly through the study of its original languages, namely Hebrew and Greek. Additionally, the course will explore the geographical, historical, and cultural contexts surrounding these texts, enabling students to grasp the message they conveyed to their original communities and its continued relevance in the present day.
This programme is intended for individuals involved in evangelisation, catechesis, and formation ministries within the Christian community, as well as students from diverse backgrounds. Emphasising an objective approach to the text, the course will also appeal to those interested in the study of ancient literature and students from different Christian denominations.
Students also have the option to pursue a Diploma in Scripture Studies, which covers the first two years of the B.A. programme. These initial years (Years 1-2) will provide a solid grounding in the biblical languages, the history, geography, and cultural context of the biblical texts, as well as a general introduction to the Bible, focusing on major sections of the Biblical Canon, including the Pentateuch and Historical Books, Wisdom and Prophetic Books, Gospels, and Pauline Writings. Subsequent years (Years 3-5) will further develop linguistic and literary skills through the study of selected texts from the Old and New Testaments.
The B.A. programme is offered on a part-time basis during the evenings and spans across 10 semesters. The Diploma consists of 4 semesters. More information can be acquired online.
