The UM Committee for Sustainability (C-SUM) is actively seeking to recruit and appoint sustainability champions from among the UM Community. This invitation is being extended to all members of staff, following a call which had been communicated to Deans, Directors and HODs.
Sustainability is a concept that means many things to different people. However, the collective efforts, behaviours and attitudes have far-reaching implications for everybody. There are multiple benefits to having key individuals identified, appointed and working with and across all entities.
(a) Initiatives, recommendations and suggestions made by individuals or groups within entities, can serve as an exchange of ideas and lead to sustainable practices which can be taken up by a wider number of participants;
(b) Sustainability champions can contribute to discussions about policies, actions and directions and subsequently support C-SUM in the implementation of university-wide sustainability policies.
(c) As an institution and with the help of sustainability champions, UM can reinforce its actions, identify issues and challenges, and collect recommendations and suggestions to shape the directions we could follow to further strengthen sustainability within/across University.
(d) As an institution, UM is committed to making a positive contribution to society and our environment through research, teaching, engagement and daily practices. Thus sustainability champions will be in a position to model and promote sustainable practices, creating a multiplier effect.
(e) Sustainability champions could facilitate the establishing of links with other organisations, educational institutions and local communities to enhance sustainability efforts.
If you are interested in being a Sustainability Champion – whether you are a student or a member of staff working at any of the UM sites - drop an email to Ms Isabelle Warrington by Thursday 6 June. The nominees will eventually be contacted by C-SUM.
