What's new in Melitensia
Melitensia's Resource of the month – November 2024
Ladies of Lascaris: Christina Ratcliffe and the forgotten heroes of Malta’s war written by Paul McDonald, and published by Pen & Sword Books.
This book recounts the experiences of Christina Ratcliffe and other British and Maltese women who served as civilian plotters for the Royal Air Force in 1942. It also references Philip Glassborow’s acclaimed musical, Star of Strait Street, which tells a related story. Drawing on early writings by Ratcliffe and Tamara Marks, the narrative delves into their work at the operational headquarters beneath Lascaris Bastion in Valletta during the intense WWII bombing campaigns. As eyewitnesses to trauma and tragedy, six of these women, including Ratcliffe, were honoured for their bravery with decorations for gallantry. McDonald’s account revives the memory of Ratcliffe and the “Ladies of Lascaris,” offering a unique female perspective on the experiences and challenges of that time of military conflict.
The list of new Melitensia acquisitions is available online.
