Prospective students applying for the above courses are required to take part in an audition and/or interview as a form of assessment for their eligibility to the programme. However, applicants for the B. Mus. (Hons) with a pass at Grade C or better at Advanced Matriculation Level in Music are exempted from both interview and audition. The same exemption applies in the case of applicants for the Bachelor of Arts in Music Studies, Bachelor of Knowledge and Information Management and Music Studies, and the Bachelor of Arts in Theology and Music Studies who hold a pass at Grade C or better at Intermediate Matriculation Level or higher in Music. In the case of applicants without the above-mentioned qualifications, admittance to both courses is subject to a successful audition and/or interview.
On the day of the audition and /or interview, the applicant will be asked to write ~300 words in the form of an evaluation of a music performance that the applicant has seen or participated in recently, or an evaluation of a music book/ composition/ article.

In addition, applicants must bring with them for the audition and/or interview the following items:
Criteria for the audition and interview include technical ability (control, flow, quality of earlier training, ability to talk technically about music); the student’s potential for development (quality of observation, commitment, expression, musicality); social interaction (the student’s openness to new ideas and ability to work with others); articulation (ability to explain their interests in music studies and express their opinions); creativity (the ability to respond to tasks, improvise, take risks and problem solve); and critical thinking skills in written English.

Important information for international applicants:
Since English is the language of tuition and communication, all international applicants are required to submit a Secure English Language Test (TOEFL/IELTS/Cambridge Advanced) to the required standard by 31 August on the year of entry. More information is available on the UM website. Please note that applicants who fail to submit this certificate by the stipulated deadline cannot be admitted to the course even if all other entry requirements are satisfied.
