Dr. Christian Zammit obtained his medical degree from the University of Malta in 2007. After working for 3 years as a house officer in Mater Dei Hospital he started a Masters Degree in Neurophysiology, which he finished in 2011. He was appointed an Assistant Lecturer with the Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine and surgery in October 2011. He completed a PhD with the Department of Physiology and Biochemistry on the characterisation of hypoglycaemic injury in white matter, and was promoted to Lecturer in 2019.
Dr. Zammit is the coordinator of three main modules covered across the first two pre-clinical years of the medical course: Nervous System I, Anatomy Practical Skills I, and Anatomy Practical Skills II. He is in charge of teaching all the Head and Neck anatomy, and Neuroanatomy to the second year medical students in the form of formal lectures small group discussions, and dissection sessions. He is also involved in teaching of ad hoc Masters organised by the University of Malta, including: Masters in Addiction Studies, and Masters in Surgery. He offers teaching services to other Faculties at the University of Malta, including the Faculties of Health Science, Dentistry, and Engineering. He also provides effective contribution to the administrative running of the Anatomy Department.
Dr Zammit's main research interest is neuropathology; specifically white matter injury following brain insults such as hypoglycaemia and ischaemia. He is a motivated researcher skillful in complex research techniques which include but are not limited to: live two-photon imaging, brain slice preparation, electrophysiology, and immunocytochemistry. He collaborated with foreign experts on various research projects which yielded excellent peer-reviewed publications.
