Before joining the Department of Mechanical Engineering within the University of Malta, Dr Micallef had a career in industry. Dr Micallef has worked for such prestigious entities as Cummins Generator Technologies, UK and Air Malta.

He read for his undergraduate degree at the University of Malta. He then joined Management Systems Unit Ltd and was responsible for the setting up of the fibre optic computer network infrastructure of the government of Malta. Following this post, he then joined Malta's national airline company (Air Malta plc) and was responsible for various sections within the engineering department. With this experience behind him, Dr Micallef then returned to Nottingham to read for his Ph.D.

Dr Micallef is a great believer in the benefits of hands on experience and in 2010 has taken a two year academic break to join Cummins Generator Technologies in the UK. There he was responsible for setting up a global thermo-fluids engineering group within the company.

Research is, of course, a large part of Dr Micallef's work but he also has time for a regular teaching load and is supervisor to several undergraduate, Masters, Ph.D and post doctoral students.
