Prof. Farrugia graduated
Summa Cum Laude from the University of Malta in 1991 with a B.Pharm.(Hons.) degree. In 1994 he was awarded a scholarship grant by the University of Malta and a research assistantship by the Institute for Tuberculosis Research at the University of Illinois at Chicago, enabling him to pursue his studies towards a Ph.D. in Pharmacy, with specialisation in Pharmaceutics, which he obtained in December 1998. In recognition of his academic achievements, Prof. Farrugia was inducted to both the Rho Chi Pharmacy Honor Society and the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.
Prof. Farrugia was appointed Lecturer in Chemistry at the Junior College of the University of Malta in 2001. He was subsequently appointed Senior Lecturer in Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry in 2007, and promoted to Associate Professor in 2012. He currently lectures in both biological and applied chemistry, and oversees all the department's chemistry practical study units.
Prof. Farrugia is closely linked with the pharmaceutical industry in Malta, with experience in Good Manufacturing Practices, quality assurance and regulatory affairs. He has been the President of the
Malta Qualified Persons Association (MQPA) since 2004, and is also currently the President of the
European Industrial Pharmacists Group (EIPG).

2014Prof. Farrugia is the Project Leader for ERDF011 (Furnishing and Equipping of the
Chemistry & Biology Building Extensions) and the Contact Person for ERDF018
(Strengthening of Analytical Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering and Electromagnetics
RTDI Facilities). He is also the elected representative of the Department of
Chemistry on the Faculty Board of the Faculty of Science, the Chairperson of the
Faculty of Science Subcommittee on Health and Safety and the Chairperson of the
Faculty of Science Subcommittee on the National Curriculum Framework, and a member of
the Boards of Studies of the Chemistry Single Honours and Chemistry Double Honours
courses.
