Professor Eugene Buttigieg graduated Doctor of Laws (LL.D.) from the University of Malta in 1986, Master of Laws (LL.M.) in European Legal Studies (with distinction) from the University of Exeter as a Chevening Scholar in 1991 and Ph.D. from the University of London in 2004 with a doctoral thesis on the safeguarding of consumer interests under US and EU competition law.
He was admitted to the Maltese Bar in 1987. He began his professional career in the Maltese Government legal service as a Legal Officer at the Ministry of Justice (1987-1990), then a Senior Legal Officer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1990-1994). Subsequently he embarked on an academic career during which, as Lecturer (1994-2001), Senior Lecturer (2001-2006), Associate Professor (2007-2018) and Professor (since 2019) and holder of a Jean Monnet Chair in EU Law (awarded in 2009) at the University of Malta, he was involved in teaching and research in the fields of EU law, competition law, consumer law and intellectual property. He is the author of numerous publications in these fields. He has been a visiting professor in a number of other universities, amongst which Queen Mary University of London (Visiting Professor of Competition Law since 2016). Professor Buttigieg is a co-founder and vice-president of the Maltese Association for European Law.
In addition to his academic activities, he was a legal advisor on EU law and competition law in the private sector and also served as legal advisor in the Maltese Ministry of the Economy and the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority from 2000 to 2012. Moreover, he was a member of the Copyright Board (Malta) from 1994 to 2005 and a member of the Malta Resources Authority from 2001 to 2009.
Since 8 October 2012 he has been serving as a judge at the EU's General Court in Luxembourg.
