Dr Huw S. Groucutt (lecturer in Mediterranean prehistory) is an archaeologist with wide ranging interests in human evolution and prehistory. He focuses in particular on exploring the relationship between environmental change and human behavioural & demographic change. He uses the study of stone tool assemblages to cast light on such topics. His research focusses on the Mediterranean and the adjacent arid regions of Southwest Asia and Northern Africa.
Following degrees in Archaeology (B.A.) and Palaeoanthropology (M.Sc.) at the University of Sheffield, Dr Groucutt completed his doctoral studies in archaeological science at the University of Oxford (D.Phil). He was subsequently employed as a postdoctoral researcher on the European Research Council funded Palaeodeserts Project, followed by a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship, both at the University of Oxford. He subsequently moved to Germany and became a group leader (W2) of the independent Max Planck Extreme Events Group, based at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History in Jena. He is also an affiliated reader at the University of Cologne. He joined the University of Malta in 2022.
As well as widely publishing his research, he has been engaged in considerable archaeological fieldwork, including in Malta, Arabia, and Senegal, and has taught diverse aspects of archaeological method and theory.
