Dr Ingrid Vella is a lecturer at the Department of AI within the Faculty of ICT at the University of Malta. Ingrid's main research interests span biomedical applications of AI.
Ingrid read Electrical Engineering at the University of Malta in 2010, where she wrote her B.Eng.(Hons) thesis on the classification of physical movements based on human EEG data with Dr Kenneth Scerri. She moved on to study Biomedical Engineering with focus on neurotechnology at Imperial College London in 2011. She wrote her M.Sc. thesis on a study of human kinematics in daily life environments with Dr Aldo Faisal at the Brain and Behaviour Lab.
For her Ph.D. in Physics degree, Ingrid joined the Sir Peter Mansfield Imaging Centre at the University of Nottingham, the home of MRI. She helped develop novel imaging using a magnetoencephalography scanner, and worked on ways of improving the image resolution of MRI images of the human brain acquired at ultra high field, with Professor Richard Bowtell and Dr Paul Glover.
Upon returning to Malta, Ingrid completed a course at the University of Malta in Maltese proofreading and in 2019 completed a joint MBA degree from the London School of Commerce and the University of Bedfordshire.
Between and after her studies, Ingrid worked as a lecturer at MCAST as well as a laboratory engineer at Methode Electronics. She gained insights into management throughout her three years of working as a research project manager in ICT and Engineering at the University of Malta.
Ingrid heads the ICT committee for the Maltese Language Council and is the deputy editor for the Chamber of Engineers' magazine, Engineering Today. She is a member of the management committee of the European Cost Action on NMR relaxometry, and is on the board of the University of Malta's MRI platform.
