Dr Jonathan L Portelli is a lecturer and the Head of the Radiography Department at the University of Malta.
After successfully obtaining a BSc (Hons.) Degree in 2004, Jonathan worked as a diagnostic radiographer at both public and private hospitals in Malta. In 2009 Jonathan pursued his interest in healthcare research and obtained an MSc in Health and Social Care Research from the University of Sheffield. Subsequently in 2019, Jonathan obtained a PhD from University College Dublin after successfully conducting a mixed-methods research study that explored radiation dose awareness, benefit-risk communication and consent practices for paediatric imaging examinations performed in Malta.
Dr Portelli has been involved in undergraduate and postgraduate radiography education in Malta since 2007. Apart from lecturing, Jonathan is actively involved in the clinical tutoring and assessment of radiography students' skills and competencies. Additionally, he has successfully supervised over 30 imaging research projects and studies at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels over a broad range of imaging modalities, including diagnostic radiography, paediatric imaging, CT, mammography, MRI, nuclear medicine and ultrasound. He has contributed to several international peer reviewed publications and has delivered numerous presentations at national and international conferences, including the annual European Congress of Radiology (ECR) and the European Society of Paediatric Radiology (ESPR) Postgraduate Course.
Dr Portelli is a past president of the Maltese Society of Medical Radiographers and a past Chair of the Radiographers Scientific Subcommittee for ECR2024, having served on the Radiographers Scientific Subcommittee between 2021 and 2024.
Currently, Dr Portelli is the Chair of the European Federation of Radiographer Societies Research Hub (EFRS Research Hub), whose aim is to encourage and facilitate radiographers' research activity at international meetings and conferences.
