Prof. Julian Evans graduated B.Sc.(Hons.) in biology and chemistry and M.Sc. in biology from the University of Malta, and obtained a Ph.D. in ecology at the University of Plymouth (UK). He was subsequently a post-doctoral researcher on a number of EU projects working on marine protected area networks and benthic habitat research, and is currently a resident academic at the University of Malta's Department of Biology. He is a member of the Royal Society of Biology (Britain) and of the Marine Biological Association of the UK, and has been appointed to Malta's National Scientific Advisory Council for the Environment.

Prof. Evans publishes regularly, having authored over 60 papers in international peer-reviewed scientific journals as well as numerous other works including book chapters, conference papers, technical reports and popular articles. His main research interests are structural and functional ecology of marine species and benthic communities (both coastal and deep-sea), marine bioinvasions, and ecological monitoring. He also serves as a scientific consultant on environmental monitoring and assessment, and has contributed to several Environmental Impact Assessments, Environmental Baseline Surveys and Monitoring Programmes, as well as assessments on the status of endangered species.
