Dr Karen Mugliett is Head of the Department of Health, Physical Education and Consumer Studies and senior lecturer at the Faculty of Education, University of Malta. She is involved in lecturing, research, and administration and has supervised numerous dissertations an undergraduate and post-graduate levels. She is co-ordinator of both the BSc and the MTL Home Economics degree programmes and chairperson of the faculty’s outreach committee as well as member of the EdD committee. Dr Mugliett is a health educator and communicator and regularly participates in community projects and research activities around family studies, healthy eating, food education, nutrition, sustainable consumption, children and older adults. She has participated in numerous conferences at national and international level and is also a regular guest speaker on the local media on similar subjects. She acquired diplomas in the culinary arts and food preparation and postgraduate degrees in education and administration and management. She obtained a doctoral degree in education from the University of Sheffield focusing on innovative pedagogies and technology enhanced learning. She is the author of the book ‘Seasonal and Sustainable: cooking for healthy living’, and various other peer reviewed publications and media articles. Between 2017 and 2021 Dr Mugliett was chairperson of the Malta Food Safety Commission and previously was a member of the board of governors of a church school in Malta in the past. From 2015 to date Dr Mugliett has been a member of the Adoptions Board.


Dr Mugliett was the chairperson of the Malta Food Safety Commission from 2017 – 2021. She was a director on the board of the Malta Council for Science and Technology and a director on the Board of Governors of the Convent of the Sacred Heart Foundation. Currently she is a member on the Adoptions Board.

At international level Dr Mugliett is Vice President of the European Association of Home Economists and member on the executive committee of the International Federation for Home Economics.
