Associate Professor and the Director of the Centre for Environmental Education and Research (CEER) at the University of Malta. He has more than 25 years teaching experience and he designed and currently coordinates both the Master in Education for Sustainable Development (MESD) and the Certificate in Environmental Interpretation and Education (CEEI). Mark is a Chartered Biologist, a Chartered Environmental Scientist, a Chartered Science Teacher, a Certified Wildlife Photographer and a Prince II Certified Practitioner with a wide range of experience in Environmental Education and Education for Sustainable Development
Mark drafted management plans for nature parks, reviewed EIAs, performed stakeholder analyses and advised on ODZ applications as an independent member on the NHAC board within MEPA. Mark was entrusted as a member on various national and international boards including the IUCN Commission on Education and Communication (CEC) and the National Education for Sustainable Development Strategy Committee (NESDS), He is the Chief Examiner (worldwide) of the International Baccalaureate ‘Environmental Systems and Societies’ and is also the Deputy head of the European School of Sustainability Science and Research based in Hamburg. Mark participated in a number of EU funded projects and has drawn up a number of technical reports for a number of private and government entities.
Mark held academic posts at the University of Ca Foscari Venice, Italy, at SNHU, James Madison and NU in the US and at the University of Yaounde, Cameroon. Mark has published peer reviewed papers, a number of books, edited two volumes of the World Sustainability Series by Springer, and co-edited the academic SDG book series by Emerald. Mark was the Convener of 1st World Symposium on Lifelong Learning for Sustainable Development, (Malta, 2017) and of the 1st National Symposium of Education for Sustainable Development and Global Education (April, 2022). In addition to reviewing papers for a number of academic journals in the field, Mark is the current Deputy Editor of the International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education (IJSHE). His current research interests focus on pro-environmental behavior modelling and policy, effective environmental education, transformative pedagogies and in sustainable development goals implementation.
