Prof. Ing. Paul Refalo, a warranted mechanical engineer by profession, is an associate professor with the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Malta, and an associate of the Institute for Sustainable Energy. His research interests include sustainable manufacturing, resource efficiency in industry and lifecycle engineering. He has led and participated in several funded research projects, and supervised various BEng, MSc, and PhD studies. His research work, focusing on sustainable engineering, is widely published in international journals and conferences.

Prof. Refalo graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Malta in 2007 and obtained his PhD with a thesis on Solar Desalination of Seawater in 2015. He is registered with the Regulator for Energy and Water Services as an Energy Auditor and as an Energy Performance of Buildings Assessor. He was appointed consulting engineer on various industrial and research projects related to energy management, renewable energy technologies and sustainability in buildings and industry.

He is currently a member of the Management Committee of the COST Action CA22110, ‘Cooperation, development and cross-border transfer of Industrial Symbiosis among industry and stakeholders (LIAISE)’, member on the ‘Sustainable Use of Resources for Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Board’, and serves as Expert Evaluator for Horizon Europe, the Clean Energy Transition Partnership (CETP), the Dutch Research Council (NWO), and others.
