Professor Peter G Xuereb graduated Doctor of Laws (LL.D) from the University of Malta in 1977. He was called to the bar (Advocate) in Malta in 1978. He specialised in company law and shipping law at University College London (LL.M, 1979) and wrote his Ph.D thesis on Comparative European Company Law at the University of Cambridge (as a member of Gonville and Caius College) graduating in 1983. He was a Commonwealth Scholar 1978-1979 and a W.M.Tapp student (Gonville and Caius College)1979-1982.

Professor Xuereb was a lecturer at Ealing College of Higher Education (1982 – 1985) and the University of Exeter (1985 – 1990), and senior lecturer at the University of London (Queen Mary College, 1990 – 1993. He has been Visiting Professor in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Italy. He served on the Senate of the University of Exeter, as Chairman of the LLM Board of Studies and Board of Examiners of the University of London, and as a member of the Council of the University of Malta.

Since 1993, Professor Xuereb has been at the University of Malta as Professor of European and Comparative Law, has served as Head of Department of European and Comparative Law, and has occupied the post of Chairman of the Institute for European Studies (formerly named the European Documentation and Research Centre)and served on Council for three terms. He is a Jean Monnet Professor (since 2001). He has acted as consultant in various branches of national and European Law including company law, financial services law and regulation, internal market law, labour law, gender equality and non-discrimination law, immigration law, and constitutional law.

Professor Xuereb has been President of the Malta European Studies Association, and is President of the Malta European Law Studies Association, and chairman of the National Committee for Comparative Law (Affiliated to the International Academy for Comparative Law). He has been a member of the Advisory Board of the Law Academy of the Chamber of Advocates.
