Dr Susan Mercieca is a lecturer in the Department of Radiography at the University of Malta. In 2003, Susan was awarded a prestigious government scholarship to pursue a B.Sc. in Therapeutic Radiography at Kingston University, which she successfully completed with first-class honours in 2007. Following her graduation, she began her professional career as a therapeutic radiographer at Sir Paul Boffa Hospital, where she gained valuable experience in oncology care and radiotherapy services.
In 2010, Dr Mercieca transitioned to academia when she was appointed as an assistant lecturer at the University of Malta. Recognising the importance of furthering her expertise, she pursued an M.Sc. in Radiotherapy and Oncology at Sheffield Hallam University, completing it in 2013. Her growing passion for advancing research in the field led her to enrol for a Ph.D. at the University of Amsterdam, where she focused on enhancing radiotherapy techniques. In 2020, she successfully completed her doctoral studies with her thesis “Optimisation of the Target Volume for Lung Radiotherapy.”
In addition to her academic achievements, Dr Mercieca has made significant contributions to the development of the M.Sc. in Digital Health. This program is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to prepare healthcare professionals for the rapidly evolving digital landscape in the medical field.
Dr Mercieca’s contributions extend beyond teaching, as she has delivered presentations at several local and international conferences and authored peer-reviewed publications. Her research is centred on leveraging digital health technologies to enhance radiotherapy workflows, streamline clinical processes, and ultimately improve patient outcomes. Through her work, she continues to shape the future of therapeutic radiography and digital health education, inspiring both students and professionals to innovate and improve practices in the field.
