Data Privacy Statement

The personal data requested of you as an applicant to the University of Malta is collected and processed in the exercise of the official authority vested in us as an educational institution acting in the public interest in terms of and in accordance with the Education Act (Chapter 327 of the Laws of Malta). We collect and process this data to process your application, for admission purposes and for all other purposes connected to providing you with academic services throughout the duration of your studies at the University of Malta. Processing also includes the retention of your data in perpetuity after your studies, to be able to provide transcripts and other records of your academic attainment to yourself and third parties as may be permitted by law. Our processing of your personal data is furthermore necessary to comply with the legal obligations imposed on the Registrar of the University in article 6.2 (2) of Statute I of Schedule II of the Education Act (Chp. 327), which include keeping a record of the academic activities of each student. 

Your data will therefore be transferred to the University’s Students’ Information Management System (SIMS). It is accessible only to those individuals of the University who are required to process it by virtue of their roles and responsibilities, or to those employees who are subject to the Professional Secrecy Act, or to those employees who form part of a regulated profession, and/or have taken an oath of confidentiality for the carrying out of their duties. 

The University will only share your personal data with third parties if it is required to do so by law, or if this is necessary for the performance of a task carried out in the public interest, or if this is necessary to protect your vital interests or the vital interests of a third party, or if you have given your consent. 

You have the right, in respect of your personal data that is held and processed by us, subject to the terms laid out in the GDPR, to request access to it, to request its correction if it is inaccurate and/or its erasure if its processing is unnecessary, to request restriction of its processing, to object to such processing and to data portability.
