Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary field that combines computer science, statistics, and biology to analyze and interpret complex biological data. In recent years, advances in high-throughput technologies such as next-generation sequencing have generated vast amounts of biological data, which require sophisticated computational tools and algorithms for analysis.
Bioinformatics research aims to understand the fundamental mechanisms underlying biological processes, such as gene expression, protein structure, and function, as well as the interactions between biological molecules. Bioinformatics is also used to identify biomarkers for disease diagnosis, develop personalized treatments, and design new drugs.
In the Bioinformatics Research Group at the University of Malta, we focus on developing novel computational methods and tools for analyzing large-scale genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic data. Our research also involves the application of machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques to better understand biological systems and their interactions.
Through our research, we strive to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field of bioinformatics, both locally and globally, and to make meaningful contributions to the diagnosis and treatment of human diseases.
