Each study-unit offered by the Department of Statistics & OR is given a tag with the template 'SORabcd', which can be deciphered as follows:
SOR stands for the Department of Statistics and Operations Research.
For the B.Sc. Hons course
a - unit level code
study-units for students choosing Statistics & Operations Research as a major subject or for science students who may need advanced study-units in statistics. For these units we have the convention that the unit level code a will correspond to the year when a statistics & OR student would take the unit:
- a = 1 - units which students may select during their first year
- a = 2 - units which students may select during their second year
- a = 3 - units which students may select during their third and fourth year*
- a = 5 - onwards for postgraduate units
b - subject code
- 1 - Probability
- 2 - Statistics
- 3 - Operations Research
- 4 - Financial and Actuarial Mathematics
c - specific unit code
- specific number given to the unit within its subject and level range
d - unit sub-level code
study-units for students choosing Statistics & Operations Research as a major subject or for science students who may need advanced study-units in statistics.
- d = 0 - units intended for students in the first, second and third years.
- d = 1 - units intended for students in the fourth year†
Furthermore study-units which need to be broken down into smaller sub-units have a unit sub-level code of 8 or 9
- d = 8 - for 1st semester
- d = 9 - for 2nd semester
For Servicing study-units
a - unit level code
study-units available for students from other departments/faculties who use statistics primarily as a tool and units of this type have a unit level code of 0 or 1
- a = 0 - applies to units intended for students with limited mathematical background not exceeding that at Ordinary Level
- a = 1 - applies to units intended for students with Advanced Level Mathematics which require topics in Statistics or Operations Research as a tool rather than an object of direct study
b - subject code
- 1 - Probability
- 2 - Statistics
- 3 - Operations Research
- 4 - Financial and Actuarial Mathematics
c - specific unit code
- specific number given to the unit within its subject and level range
d -
unit sub-level code
study-units available for students from other departments/faculties who use statistics primarily as a tool and units of this type have a unit sub-level code of 0 or 1
- d = 0 - will apply to units intended for students with limited mathematical background not exceeding that at Ordinary Level
- d = 1 - will apply to units intended for students with Advanced Level Mathematics which require topics in Statistics or Operations Research as a tool rather than an object of direct study
* For study programmes which started from October 2003 onwards, value 3 will be used for both the third and fourth years. They will be distinguished by the sub-level code d.
† Applies only to course programmes which started from October 2003 onwards.
