Entry into undergraduate (Bachelor's degree) courses:

In order to be considered for admission and to satisfy the University’s General Entry Requirements you need to present:

 

(a)     The American High School Diploma with a cumulative GPA score ranging between 2 and 4, and good Grade 12 passes in English Language, a language other than English (for non-Maltese applicants), Mathematics, and a humanistic subject. If not presented in the final year of studies, the language other than English and Mathematics may be considered from the penultimate year; and

(b) a minimum of three (3) College Board Advanced Placement (AP) passes, awarded with a mark of three (3) or better in any subject. SAT scores do not compensate for the lack of College Board Advanced Placement (AP) passes.

 

Important: All Maltese applicants must satisfy the Maltese requirement specified in the Admissions Regulations, 2016 as part of the General Entry Requirements. The Admission Regulations, 2016 are available here.

Non-Maltese applicants who completed, or have been completing their secondary and high school education in Malta during the four years preceding their application for entry into the UM, are kindly advised to take note of the Admissions Regulations, which state that as from October 2027, such applicants would be required to present a pass at Grade 5 or better in Il-Malti bħala Lingwa Barranija (SEC) for the purpose of fulfilling the UM’s General Entry Requirements.

Entry into the University of Malta Junior College

Applicants who successfully complete Grade 12 without taking any AP subjects may be considered for admission as a Junior Student at the University of Malta Junior College. Such applicants must be in possession of SIX passes, with a GPA ranging between 2 and 4 in Year 12 of the American High School Diploma. The subjects must include Maltese†, English Language, Mathematics and at least one from Physics, Chemistry or Biology. † A non-Maltese applicant may be allowed to offer instead of Maltese, another language as approved by the Admissions Board; provided that such other language cannot be English, and applicants whose mother tongue is English, shall be required to offer a language other than English instead of Maltese.

Entry into courses having Special Requirements:

Any applicable Special Course Requirements will be satisfied if you present College Board Advanced Placement (AP) passes at the required level in the subjects stipulated as Special Course Requirements. These requirements can be accessed in the respective course overview in the UM’s Course Finder, and the comparability between local Matriculation level grades and College Board Advanced Placement (AP) grades is as follows:

Entry into capped courses, the Doctor of Medicine and Surgery course, and the Master of Dental Surgery course:

When applying for such courses, applicants would be required to fulfil the UM’s General Entry Requirements as per above, and separately present passes in the applicable Special Course Requirements from the Maltese examination board, MATSEC, or comparable examination boards, at the level and grade stipulated in the respective course regulations or bye-laws. These requirements can be accessed from the respective course overview in the UM’s Course Finder.

In the case of the Doctor of Medicine and Surgery course, non-Maltese applicants and Maltese applicant who, in terms of paragraph (5) of regulation 12 of the Admissions Regulations, 2016 are exempted from possessing a pass at Grade 5 or better in the Secondary Education Certificate in Maltese, are required to present the Medical Maltese Proficiency Certificate awarded by the University of Malta prior to the commencement of the Course, provided that applicants presenting overseas qualifications and a pass at Grade 5 or better in the Secondary Education Certificate examination in Maltese shall be exempted from presenting the Medical Maltese Proficiency Certificate. Entry into postgraduate (Master's degree) courses:

If you are looking to apply for a Master's course, we recommend referring to the specific requirements indicated on the Course Finder. In most cases, you must possess an undergraduate degree at a certain classification/GPA, depending on the chosen course. 

Applications for Master's courses are always assessed on a case-by-case basis following the receipt of a complete application.
