M.A in Matrimonial Canon Law

The Master of Arts in Matrimonial Canon Law and Jurisprudence is a professional inter-disciplinary programme that presents an in-depth study of the canonical legislation, jurisprudence and procedure related to marriage.  

Study modality: The course is offered on a part-time basis (evening). Lectures are delivered in-person and online.   

Degrees and duration: Candidates obtain a Postgraduate Diploma after 2 years (lectures), or a Masters after 3 years (two years of lectures and one year of research).

Career opportunities: Both degrees enable lawyers and legal procurators to assist clients in marriage procedures before the Ecclesiastical Tribunals. The course is also recommended for professionals engaged in marriage and family related services.

Modules and practicum: The programme covers the following topics: (i) canonical, Maltese and European aspects of matrimonial law; (ii) contemporary family issues; (iii) law and justice in the Church; (iv) juridical and psychological elements of marital consent; (v) matrimonial jurisprudence; (vi) theology of marriage; (vii) judicial procedures; (viii) special processes; and (ix) a brief practicum in procedural law.

Opening next: October 2024 (Offered every 3 years).   

Funding Opportunities: Eligible candidates can apply for a bursary of 2,000 EU and may benefit from a tax credit covering 70% of tuition fees under the Get Qualified Scheme.

Recognition and Accreditation of Prior Learning (RPL): Prospective students with prior expertise or skills may access the course and/or gain exemptions from certain parts through the University’s RPL process. 

Exit Award: Students may be eligible for the award of Postgraduate Diploma at the end of the Second Year.
