Summer Internships in Enterprise and Industry 2022

The Summer Internships are administered by the Centre for Liberal Arts and Sciences to provide work-based learning opportunities for all full-time University students across disciplines. The internships focus on the administration of commercial organisations and provide students with work experience.

Internship Vacancies (Summer 2022)

Eligibility of Students 

The Internships are available to students who are:

  • Following any full-time programme at the University of Malta which ends after the Internship period or in the same year of the Internship period
  • Able to dedicate time to the Internship period without affecting the duties of the full-time University programme
  • Permitted to work in Malta as regulated by national employment regulations

Eligibility of Sponsoring Organisations

The Sponsoring Organisations hosting the Internships are:  

  • Commercial organisations located in Malta from diverse backgrounds in Enterprise and Industry
  • Ideally, employing 20 full-time persons or more locally to provide Interns with a corporate experience. (Organisations with fewer employees are welcome to apply if they can offer a commercial experience which fits the learning outcomes)

Role of the Intern

The Intern will:

  • Be paid for the period of the Internship by the Sponsor
  • Continue to receive other student grants, provided the regulations of the grants allow this
  • Perform work-related tasks assigned by the Sponsor
  • Have the Internship linked to a work-based learning study unit and earn ECTS credits, which will be  added to the transcript of the full-time University programme as additional credits
  • Have the opportunity to be engaged by the Sponsor beyond the Internship programme

Role of the University

The University will:

  • Engage Sponsors willing to provide Internships
  • Issue a call for students to apply for Internships
  • Provide Sponsors with details of applicants
  • Provide guidance and support for the Interns, Sponsor Mentors and University Supervisors

Role of the Sponsor 

The Sponsor will: 

  • Remunerate Interns
  • Consider the engagement as being regulated by the Employment and Industrial  Relations Act, Occupational Health and Safety Authority Act, Social Security Act and Young Persons (Employment) Regulations
  • Cover the Registration Fee per Intern of €120 for the study unit
  • Have the right to advertise the Internship on its media
  • Select Interns from a shortlist and CVs of eligible students provided by the University
  • Identify individuals to act as the Sponsor Mentor to guide the Interns
  • Assign suitable premises and ensure the Intern's well-being 
  • Ensure that Interns are provided with a work environment which will help them achieve the learning outcomes
  • Have the opportunity to be engaged the students beyond the Internship programme

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding - by the end of the Internship, the Intern will be able to:

  • Describe the organisation, its structure and its functions
  • Identify the roles and responsibilities of departments in the organisation
  • Analyse the stakeholder environment, including supply chains, customers, competitors and public stakeholders
  • Provide a review of the external environment of the organisation: demographic, economic, natural, technological, political and cultural factors

Skills - by the end of the Internship, the Intern will be able to:

  • Develop communications skills adapted to enterprise environments
  • Become adaptable to the challenges of the workplace
  • Emulate good practices and adopt a professional work ethic
  • Develop work practices specific to the Sponsor’s work environment

Coordination

The Internships are administered by the Centre for Liberal Arts and Sciences and developed as part of the UM Strategic Plan 2020-2025, focusing on Enterprise.
