Basic Medical Maltese for the Healthcare Professions

In order to ensure that all international healthcare professionals employed in the health sector have sufficient speaking knowledge of the Maltese language to allow them to communicate adequately with Maltese patients, the Department of Maltese at the University of Malta in collaboration with a number of stakeholders runs the following courses:

The course introduces students to conversational medical Maltese focusing on the areas of basic anatomical terminology, healthcare professional/patient communication, understanding patients' symptoms, and interacting in a Maltese medical setting. Throughout the course, the students will have the opportunity to extend their communication skills through role-play and medical conversations. Additionally, the students will be exposed to basic Maltese grammar and vocabulary that enables them to communicate verbally in Maltese in the local healthcare setting.

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • understand patients' general symptoms expressed in Maltese;
  • answer typical simple questions used in a Maltese medical setting.

The course will help students to:

  • acquire a fair command of basic communicative Maltese;
  • familiarise themselves with basic medical vocabulary;
  • engage in basic conversation with patients and medical colleagues.

This study-unit builds on MAL0019 Basic Medical Maltese for the Healthcare Professions 1, and is partly a reinforcement of its content. It therefore focuses on the necessary skills to communicate effectively in Maltese with patients and their relatives and with colleagues in a medical environment.

The study-unit, however, exposes the participants to basic Maltese grammar, more specific anatomical terminology, doctor-patient communication and understanding patients’ symptoms, prescribing medicines and interacting in a medical setting. Students will have the opportunity to extend their communication skills in Maltese through case studies, role-play and medical conversations.

The aim of this study-unit is to help foreign healthcare professionals consolidate basic Maltese grammar and acquire sufficient medical terminology in Maltese in order to enable them to communicate efficiently in the local healthcare setting.

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

  • communicate in basic Maltese;
  • engage in basic conversation with patients and medical colleagues;
  • know the meaning of basic medical terminology and expressions in Maltese.

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

  • understand patients' general symptoms expressed in Maltese;
  • ask simple questions typically used in the Maltese medical setting;
  • prescribe medicine and explain its posology in simple clear Maltese.
