Our taught MA Health, Medicine and Society explores the ways that aspects of social life, on both a local and global level, impact health and experience of illness. Run by the Department of Sociology in the Faculty of Arts, this MA will examine aspects of society at the root of processes where medicine, illness and health are impacted by beliefs, place and culture.
You will follow six taught study units which are delivered in the evenings, between 17:00 and 19:00, three times a week. These units cover topics as varied as inequalities in health, the lived experience of health and illness, global health and digital health, to mention a few.
You will also learn how to design and carry out research projects using both qualitative and quantitative techniques, and will be given hands- on instruction on data analysis software such a s nVivo and SPSS.
The MA programme concludes in the fifth semester (ie within two years) with a 15000 word dissertation based on a topic of the students choice.
This MA Health, Medicine and Society will be especially useful if you are interested in working in any health-related environment providing a service of care, management or therapy. It also offers an excellent background to anyone thinking of venturing into health journalism or research .
