As organisations strive to adapt to the ever-developing topic of occupational health and safety, the need for qualified and skilled professionals in the area increases. This course aims to reflect the development of this area of specialisation. An inter-disciplinary approach towards occupational health and safety shall be adopted, including perspectives from: occupational safety; health and safety law; occupational hygiene; occupational health; management; sociology; occupational psychology; ergonomics; statistics; epidemiology; toxicology; environmental health; health and safety management; workplace design; health promotion and research. The curriculum will provide you with the knowledge and necessary skills to enable you to work in the capacity of an occupational health and safety professional. The programme covers the following themes: Health and safety law; Occupational safety; Occupational health and hygiene; Risk assessment and control; Occupational psychology, ergonomics (human factors) and workplace design; Health and safety management; Practical application and professional development; and Research.

Communication and Academic Skills Programme
The communication and academic skills programme complements students’ main course of study. It introduces them to writing and presenting as situated within academic contexts sensitive to specific disciplines and develops their competences for future careers.

Applicants must satisfy the General Entry Requirements for admission, namely, the Matriculation Certificate and Secondary Education Certificate passes at Grade 5 or better in Maltese, English Language and Mathematics.

(1) Applicants admitted under sub-paragraph (a) (iii) of paragraph (2) of regulation 2 of the Admission Regulations must be in possession of qualifications and experience that would satisfy the Board of Studies, through an interview, that they have reached the academic standard required to follow the Course with profit.

(2) Applicants admitted in terms of paragraph (1) shall be in possession of a pass in an English language proficiency test as approved by the University before being admitted to the Course, provided that applicants in possession of a Secondary Education Certificate pass at Grade 3 or higher in English Language or a pass at the same standard in a comparable qualification, shall be exempted from sitting for the proficiency test.

(3) Applicants in possession of the Diploma in Social Studies (Occupational Health and Safety) of this University with an average mark of 60% or over, or a comparable qualification in an area related to Occupational Health and Safety, or who have obtained ECTS credits for study-units considered by the Board of Studies to be equivalent to those in the programme of study, may also be admitted to the Course. Subject to the provisions of the Principal Regulations, such applicants may be allowed by the Board of Studies to transfer these credits to the Course, provided that:

(i) the number of credits so transferred shall not exceed 60 ECTS credits and
(ii) they may be required to follow a programme of study as approved by the Board of Studies.

Applicants in terms of the 'maturity (adult learners) clause' are required to sit for an English Proficiency Test to be held in 7 September 2022. Successful applicants will then be required to sit for an interview sometime during the same month. Once announced, these dates cannot be changed. Such applicants shall be exempted from sitting for the proficiency test if they are in possession of a pass at SEC level English at Grade 3 or better or equivalent. The closing date for receipt of applications from applicants in terms of the 'maturity clause' (those who will be sitting for the proficiency test and/or interview) is 31 August 2022 at 2pm.

The admission requirements are applicable for courses commencing in October 2022.
