My article exposes in some detail Antonio Gramsci's ideas which are of relevance to adult education. The Italian theorist accorded certain forms of adult education an important role in the 'war of position' intended to confront, surround and supersede the bourgeois state. This article examines Gramsci's work concerning the Factory Council Movement, conceived as a politically educative movement, and his other writings advocating the need to generate alternative cultural associations and institutions. In addition, the article will also underline Gramsci's role as a committed adult educator.en_GB
