Abstract: This article will focus on the importance being attached to Antonio Gramsci (1891-1937) in a section of the published literature, in English, on adult education. It is mainly that section of the literature which deals with radical adult education. Writers pertaining to this particular school of adult education see potential in Gramsci's writings and actions primarily because the Italian theorist himself regarded forms of adult education as having an important role to play in a 'war of position' intended to confront, surround and eventually supersede the bourgeois state.
