Abstract: | This study attempted to unravel what motivates young people commit themselves to carnival float making in Malta, the career trajectory involved in this process (onset of interest, maintenance and escalation) and the factors contingent upon (and resulting from) such motivation and involvement The study made use of a qualitative approach intended to give voice the main protagonists of this study (that is, young carnival float-makers). Their narratives were drawn via intensive, in-depth, topic guided and semi-structured interviews, lasting a minimum of one hour. 8 informants (all committed carnival float-makers) were recruited (aged between 18 and 35). Participants were mainly male; however, a woman who is a highly committed carnival float maker took part in this study. The float-makers’ narratives revealed how float-making and carnival are a significant part of their life. It acts as a liberating force and eases the struggles and challenges of everyday life. Float-making also provides the space for self-expression, creativity and skills-development. These narratives also dwelled upon the struggles participants face year after year. Additionally, the participants highlighted the importance of their emotional ties to this art form and the sense of belonging the warehouse (maħżen), float-making and carnival provide. |
