Through an in-depth analysis of the 2018 Synod of Bishops on Young People, the Faith and Vocational Discernment, this dissertation seeks to understand the participation of young people throughout the entire process and the impact that it left on the Church. Rather than being a Synod on young people, it proved to be a Synod on the entire Church, on its mission and on its style of accompanying and discerning. Young people awakened the aspect of synodality during this Synod. Synodality has been a key aspect of Pope Francis’ episcopate, and during the Synod process, this new dynamics was put into play. This study looks into Pope Francis’ commitment to involve young people more fully within the Church. The involvement of young people is necessary for the transformation that is much needed within the Church. “The Church, through Peter’s successor, is crying out that young people count, that they are the necessary protagonists of change and that is why they are called to the mission!” (Chagas, as cited in Dicastery for Laity Family and Life, 2019b) It is hoped that this study will shed light on the challenges that are impeding the Church from flourishing and contribute towards creating more awareness and understanding on the importance of synodality, particularly in listening to and journeying with young people. Furthermore, it aims to understand the role of young people within the Catholic Church, and how their active engagement can help the Church be more fruitful in its mission and to adapt to the changes of the modern world.en_GB
