Abstract: The effects of childhood neglect are not merely evident within child protection services; however, the impact could also be observed through involvement with the juvenile justice system. The number of child neglect cases has consistently been on the rise, yet, research focusing on this form of maltreatment has been scarce. The absence of a parent/caregiver bond, lack of basic needs and peer/parent rejection exposes the child to a myriad of challenges such as aggression, impulsiveness, and affiliation with negative peer groups. This research seeks to explore child neglect as a potential risk factor for juvenile delinquency by employing a qualitative research approach, by means of semi-structured interviews, with five professionals within the educational system which were analysed using a thematic approach. The findings of this study demonstrate that the absence of the parent/caregiver to provide the child with basic necessities such as feelings of belonging, security and educational opportunities plays a crucial role in involvement in delinquent behaviour. The study concludes with general recommendations for further research and educational advancements required concerning child neglect and juvenile delinquency.
