dc.description.abstract | Discussing the Maltese Goat specie has to start off with confirming if it is really indigenous or endemic. In this historical study, discussing this point with all entities, like folklore experts, professors & other authorities, one would realize that there are different opinions regarding the origins of the specie. When discussing the origins of the Maltese Goat with these authorities & specialists, the studies are opinion based with no scientific studies confirming the origins, there is a general fact amongst all, that the first traces of this specie were found in the ‘Ghar Dalam’ temples (Skorba period), so that can be the start for a scientific research to confirm the origins, using the bone remains of the specie & comparing it scientifically in DNA & structure between the bones remains & today’s present breed. During this study, apart considering all historical facts about the specie, the research also mentions the folklore aspect of the Maltese Goat specie used in our local society, mentioning the brucellosis virus amongst the goats affecting its milk. Also mentioning too, the specie morphological & physiological aspects of the species are discussed. Finally concluding if the specie is a local breed or not & asking for further research to confirm this theory by DNA analysis, also mentioning other breeds being used locally presently & the differences between the Maltese Goat specie & other breeds being used locally. Also what type of products can be produced by goat milk & the difference between the goats & cows being farmed in Malta. | en_GB |
