Abstract: The Lisbon European Council of 2000 set, as a new strategic goal for the EU over the 2000 - 2010 decade, “to become the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy in the world capable of sustainable economic growth with more and better jobs and greater social cohesion.” The Lisbon overall employment target is 70% for the enlarged EU and that for women is 60%. This requires the creation of 22 x 10^6 jobs translating to a net employment creation of around 3 x 10^6 jobs per year. Increased employment will not only contribute to the desired economic growth but will also reinforce the sustainability of social protection systems. Despite the current weak economic growth, the female employment rate increased reaching 55.6% in EU in 2002. [Excerpt]
