Abstract: This is one of a small group of paintings painted by Michaelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio during his brief stay in Malta between July 1607 and October 1608 which, besides this portrait, include a small corpus of works painted for a restricted circle of friends close to the Grand Master Aloph de Wignacourt. The only two paintings that are still in Malta are at St John’s Co-Cathedral, Valletta. These are the Beheading of St John the Baptist, the titular painting of the Oratory of the Beheading and which still hangs in situ, and the St Jerome, painted for the Knight of Malta, Fra Ippolito Malaspina, and which, until relatively recently, was still hanging in the chapel of St Catherine of Italy within the same church just over Malaspina’s tombstone.
