Abstract: The main objective of this project is to offer a sustainable solution for home gardens to promote pro-environmental behaviour, whilst diminishing the effect of food deserts in urbanised communities where there is a lack of access to nutritious yet affordable food. This is done through the development of a prototype which will allow users to grow herbs and other plants, even in smaller urban environments which would otherwise put a strain on available resources like space and water. Overcoming this issue will positively contribute towards the well-being of the user by promoting a healthier lifestyle, as well as encouraging pro-environmental behaviour in the user’s everyday life. Throughout the research, problems regarding nutrition which are introduced through rapid urbanisation and smaller urban environments were quite evident. This, along with the increase in health consciousness and trends which align with the users’ values, revealed a design opportunity keen to be addressed. Other factors which are important to the consumers, such as compactness and ease of use, were identified as imperative aspects that the design must align with. Therefore, the resultant prototype makes use of several modules which fit together to create a modular compact irrigation system. The implementation of a mini-dehumidification system was used as a method of water generation applied to a hydroponic system of growing plants.
