Abstract: Overview of the topic: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is an eating disorder and mental illness characterised by restricting food intake which is typically accompanied by overexercising and usually results in starvation (NHS, 2021). AN can lead to many complications related to the heart, gastrointestinal system, anaemia, osteoporosis and amenorrhea (Eating Recovery Center, Anorexia Health Risks & Consequences, 2020). Although various treatment programmes are available, it is common for patients with AN to relapse (Eating Recovery Center, Eating Disorder Relapse is Common, 2019). The research question: Does the use of Zinc supplementation aid in patients recovering from anorexia nervosa? PICO elements: Population (P) patients with AN, intervention (I) use of zinc supplementation, comparison (C) no use of zinc supplementation, outcome (O) improved recovery. Method: A systematic literature search was carried out using various electronic databases. A manual search was also performed. The inclusion/exclusion criteria were applied to evaluate the eligibility of the articles. A total of 5 key studies were identified. The literature was critically appraised b with the use of the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) tool. Results: There was a common disposition towards the use of zinc supplementation being beneficial in aiding the recovery of AN patients. However, inconsistencies were found when comparing the findings of the chosen studies. Hence, it was determined that the overall results should be interpreted with caution. Conclusion: Although a definite conclusion cannot be given, the evidence gathered presents the possibility of benefits being obtained from taking zinc supplementation when suffering from AN. However, further research is required in this area in order to answer the PICO question. Implications and recommendations: Further education needs to be given to both health care professionals and educators who frequently come across patients with AN at their workplace. Moreover, there is a need for evidence-based guidelines and policies to help guide staff members in providing the best care for patients with AN was discussed.
