Abstract: HISTORICAL SKETCH. As soon as the works of defence of the new city of Valletta had been sufficiently advanced, the Order of St. John decided to build a Conventual Church, to be dedicated to their patron Saint. Want of funds would have considerably delayed the erection; but the Grand Master, La Cassiere, undertook to build the Church at his own expense, and charged Girolamo Cassar (1) a Maltese Architect, with the plans.
