| Abstract: | The opera was performed for the first time on 17 February 1859 at the Teatro Apollo in Rome. It was originally intended to be staged at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, but the story of a husband who kills his alleged rival, the king of Sweden, was considered outrageous by the Bourbon censorship. Verdi therefore introduced some changes, transforming the king into a governor and moving the action from Stockholm to Boston. |
