Abstract: L'amico Fritz is an opera in three acts by Pietro Mascagni, premiered in 1891 from a libretto by P. Suardon (Nicola Daspuro) (with additions by Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti), based on the French novel L'ami Fritz by Émile Erckmann and Pierre-Alexandre Chatrian.
Fritz Kobus is a wealthy landowner who has sworn to remain a bachelor. However, Fritz's friend, the rabbi David, bets him his vineyard that within a year, he will get married. On Fritz's birthday, Suzel, the young daughter of Fritz's tenant, arrives with a gift of flowers. After learning that Suzel is to be married soon, Fritz realizes that he has actually fallen in love with the girl. Eventually, with the help of David, Fritz and Suzel are married.
