| Abstract: | La fille du régiment (The Daughter of the Regiment) is an opéra-comique in two acts by Gaetano Donizetti to a libretto by Jean-François Bayard and Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges. The opera premiered at the Opéra-Comique in Paris on 11 February 1840. The plot: Marie is the regiment's young sutler. She was raised by soldiers from the time her father (Captain Robert) died. Marie is enterprising and courageous, so much so that in the second act she rebels against her mother, who had arranged her marriage, marrying Tonio. |
