Abstract: The aim of this study was to gain an in-depth understanding of what factors and elements play an influential and important in the marital satisfaction of heterosexual married males and females in Malta. The objectives of this were to elicit common themes across the experiences of these participants and to note any gender differences present within them. Six participants, 3 of which were male and 3 of which were female, who were aged between 30 and 50 at the time of interviewing and had been married for a minimum of 10 years, were interviewed using semi-structured interviews and the data was then analysed using thematic analysis. Various factors were found to play an important role in facilitating or hindering marital satisfaction, including past experiences, peace-keeping strategies, respect and fidelity, couple alone time, feedback and reinforcement, parenthood, illness and the ways in which one communicates, amongst others. The future implications of these results in the designing of future programs and interventions were also discussed.
