Abstract: | Francesca da Rimini is a five-act tragedy by Gabriele D'Annunzio written in 1901. It was set to music by Riccardo Zandonai in 1914. The first performance was at the Teatro Regio in Turin. This libretto is adapted by Tito Ricordi to four acts and the English text is from Arthur Symons' translation. The tragedy is inspired by an episode from the fifth canto of Dante Alighieri's Inferno. Francesca da Rimini or Francesca da Polenta was a medieval noblewoman from Ravenna, who was murdered by her husband, Giovanni Malatesta, after he discovered her affair with his brother, Paolo Malatesta. |
